Puri: On Sunday, Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi instructed officials to ensure that this year's Rath Yatra in Puri is free from any indecency.
During a meeting to assess the preparations for the annual festival set for June 27, Majhi expressed confidence in the administration's readiness to facilitate the smooth execution of the event, which draws thousands of devotees to Puri each year.
The festival features the sibling deities, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, as they journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha shrine on grand chariots.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the state administration has implemented all necessary measures to guarantee a safe Rath Yatra, with all departments collaborating effectively.
Last year, an incident occurred when the idol of Lord Balabhadra fell on servitors, injuring nine individuals during the chariot's transition to the temple.
To enhance security, AI-enabled CCTV cameras will be deployed in critical areas throughout the pilgrimage town, ensuring tight surveillance during the festival.
In light of a diarrhoea outbreak in several districts, the health department and related agencies have been directed to monitor the situation closely.
Majhi stressed the importance of preventing the sale of unhealthy food and water, while also ensuring that tourists have access to safe drinking water and nutritious food during the festivities.
He called for the servitors' cooperation to ensure that the rituals are completed smoothly and on time.
Regarding security measures, Director General of Police Y B Khurania announced a comprehensive five-tier security plan involving over 10,000 police personnel for the Rath Yatra.
Quick response teams and drone support will be utilized, with the Coast Guard positioned along the coastline to maintain safety during the celebrations. Additionally, central armed forces will be stationed at Puri's entry points, Khurania added.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, and Health Minister Mukesh Mahling.
